Everyone knows that finishing the basement adds functional square footage to the home. It’s what you do with that square footage that will set your basement apart from all others you’ve previously seen. Most homeowners who come to us to start the planning process already have a good idea what they need from their basement. Today we’re going to discuss some of the most popular basement finishing requests and how we help homeowners embellish on their ideas during the creative process.
HOME GYM
Many homeowners have the idea of building a home gym in the finished basement. Consider adding a small sauna to help sweat out the toxins and relax after a workout. Also make space for a hot tub so you can soak sore joints and muscles and really enjoy your home gym.
Child’s Playroom
We all understand that a child’s playroom won’t necessarily stay clean and organized. But on those occasions when it needs to be neat and tidy, it would be incredible to have built-in storage to hide all of the toys. Consider built-in storage in benches, tables, and in the walls as well. This way when it’s time to clean the playroom, you can wipe down the toys as you toss them into bins and clean the entire room; at least until you let the children back into the room. We all know that a clean playroom isn’t as fun.
HOME OFFICE
Many homeowners work from home on some level. Whether you’re a full time work at home homeowner or part time, you need a quiet space to call your own. Your existing home office area is likely on the main floor of the home, and maybe even in the dining room where it’s relatively quiet most of the time. A home office in the basement allows you the opportunity to create a space that is uniquely yours and decorated exactly how you want it. You may even consider adding a crafting area, enough space for Yoga, or a settee for relaxing on occasion.
UTILITY ROOM
Finishing the basement provides the perfect opportunity to create a utility room. This area should hold the electrical box, the hot water heater, the heat pump, and other elements that you want hidden from view. It could be a hidden room between two other rooms to keep it out of sight. Dress this idea up by creating a hidden access door that is actually a bookcase or storage cubbies on the wall.
MUD ROOM
A basic mud room provides a place to change out of dirty clothes so you don’t track dirt and mud through the house after a long afternoon of mowing, weed eating, and other landscaping duties. Take it a step further by including a fully functional bathroom and laundry room so you can keep several changes of clothing in the mud room. Make this a spot where you can shower and completely clean up before entering other areas of the home.
