The beauty of the average basement is that it is pretty much a blank slate where decorating is concerned. Where some people see a place to put away things that might get in the way we see a room filled with endless possibilities. You can only reveal these possibilities if you put some thought into the remodeling and decorating process. You can turn your basement into a bar, game room, entertainment room or extra bedroom. In each case, your decorating ideas will put the final stamp on the project.
One of the first things you should note when you find ideas online is that not all of them will work for you. Start with the most basic ideas and move on from there. Make a list of things you’d like to see in your basement. This list should start at least a month before the basement build. For example, let’s say you’re cleaning toys out of the living room before a business meeting, and you wish the basement had a play room; put it on the list along with your reasoning. We can look at the list and the reasons you give and help provide solutions to your everyday problems.
Depending on the reason for remodeling the basement, some changes may have to be made to the structure. These are often more than just cosmetic changes. You will have to make sure that the walls and floors are in good shape, and that there is no moisture that will undermine the renovation. Our basement systems include materials that are waterproof, mildew proof, and mold proof – they really are the perfect solution for basement building.
With many basements, the height of the ceiling is a concerned. Since extending the height of the structure will be problematic if not impossible, think about ways to create the illusion of more space. One way to do this is by using floor to ceiling drapes, usually in a light shade. Using more than one color on the walls can also create this effect. You can also use different colors to separate the room into two zones.
Basements are often poorly lit, and this will have to be rectified as part of the renovation. Choose lighting fixtures that provide good coverage so the entire room can be illuminated. To save money, choose energy saving LED bulbs. Even though they are more expensive, they last longer and use less energy.
The choice of flooring will depend on your taste, but the subflooring is of prime concern. Before you lay your carpet or tiles, we can install subflooring that will resist moisture and stand up to traffic. The furniture you choose must be compact enough to allow ease of movement in the room, especially if the basement was small to begin with. Use recessed shelves for storing books or tools so that you can make better use of your space.
In these smaller areas, remember that lighter colors usually work best, but you can paint one wall in a darker color for an interesting effect. Call us for your basement finishing and renovation needs. We can also help you make the decisions that will transform your basement from blah to wow.
