A home gym is the perfect use for your currently unfinished basement. The basement stays cooler than the rest of the house because it is almost entirely, if not entirely, underground. Finishing your basement adds a lot of square footage to your home for whatever you choose to use it for. Today we’re going to talk about building a home gym in your new space.

AVOID GYM MEMBERSHIP FEES

If you love to work out but hate paying gym membership fees, consider remodeling your basement into a gym or fitness area. Gym equipment would pay for itself within a couple of years depending on the brand you purchase, and finishing your basement will improve the overall value of your home. It’s a win-win situation.

A small basement can easily be converted to a gym area. Consider remodeling one section of a large basement into a gym, and use other spaces for other activities; a game room perhaps? Think about the equipment that you would like to use and take some measurements. Make sure that the height of your basement will accommodate whatever equipment you would like to use, and that you can move the equipment into the room easily.

HOME GYM FLOORING

Next think about what kind of flooring you would like to use. The best way to go would be using rubber flooring for a home gym area. If you do not like the look of it by itself you can opt to have carpet laid over it. It will provide you with a more aesthetically appealing look but maintain the functionality. The carpet will keep the room warm and it will be super soft under your feet. The next best choice would be laminate because of its easy clean up and inexpensive.

AIR CIRCULATION

You will need good circulation in your home gym because of the sweat and heat generated during a workout. Make sure to have some overhead fans installed and vents that will promote air circulation. Most basements have limited window space, if any. Take the opportunity to open windows occasionally if possible.

HOME GYM LIGHTING

You will need good lighting so you can see the room well, unlike when the basement is used as a lounge space. Think about installing some floor length mirrors just like you see in the gym. Mirrors help weight lifters maintain form while lifting heavy weights, but also offer motivation if you have a weight loss goal in mind. Quality mirrors offer a full length option so that you can look at yourself and be reassured that all of your hard work is paying off.

MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT

Install a TV or a nice sound system to help get your blood pumping. You could watch your favorite shows while working out, catch up on the news, or listen to your favorite music. Technological advances in speaker systems would allow you to install a surround sound system, a dock your MP3 player, and have easy and quick access to your favorite tunes.
