It is winter time. Outdoors, it is cold, wet and windy. The thought of leaving the house is unappealing: the warmth of the house is too comfortable to consider venturing out. If the weather is too bad to go outside, here are six activities for all the family to enjoy. From grandparents to young children, everyone can have some fun with these handy entertainment ideas!
1. Board games
When it comes to traditional indoor activities, there is nothing better than a good board game. To while away the hours, why not host a game of the classic Monopoly - plenty fun for the whole family. Scrabble, Clue, are great for older children, while Snakes and Ladders and Operation will keep the younger kids occupied. Once the children are in bed, the adults can enjoy the ultimate challenge: a game of the notoriously challenging Trivial Pursuit.
2. Foosball
Foosball is a great way to bring the whole family together in a fun, lively tournament, allowing you to forget the miserable weather outdoors! If your home lacks space, why not invest in a miniature foosball table or, if budget and time allows, transform your neglected basement space into a games room.
3. Card games
A deck or two of cards can bring laughter into the home in an instant. If you have a young family, there are plenty of options to choose from. Snap, Go Fish, Old Maid, Solitaire and Top Trumps are always popular! A remodeled basement can provide the perfect environment for card games; comfortable, cozy, and atmospheric.
4. Family film night
When it’s cold outside, there is nothing better than snuggling up under a blanket to watch a good family film. Animated favorites include Up!, Despicable Me, Happy Feet and The Incredibles, while Disney classics such as The Lion King, The Little Mermaid and Bambi are always winning options. If your basement space allows, you could turn your underground room into a home cinema, complete with popcorn maker, drinks fridge and comfortable seating!
5. Arts and crafts
If it’s too wet or cold to venture outside, you have the perfect excuse to indulge in some art and craft activities. Very young children love finger painting and play dough modelling; older kids may enjoy candle making while adults prefer cross stitch, sewing or even up cycling. Whatever your artistic preferences, don’t be afraid to embrace your inner creativity with the whole family!
6. Indoor treasure hunt
To make the most of your indoor space, try hosting your very own treasure hunt. Put a series of clues in envelopes, and hide them around the house - from the top floor to the basement. Make sure the final clue leads to a small gift or reward - perhaps some candy or the promise of a favor. You could even compete in two teams if your family is large enough.
There’s no doubt that winter time is the perfect excuse to enjoy your home with the whole family; so relax and take the time to enjoy some good, old-fashioned family bonding!
